JUDGE
Judge Joan Synenberg has served on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas for 17 years. She also served as a Cleveland Municipal Court Judge for 2 years.
This year, along with each of her six previous judicial elections, Judge Synenberg received the highest rating (4.0) from all participating bar associations in the "Judge 4 Yourself" Judicial Ratings Coalition. She was endorsed, in each election, by police, fire, organized labor, the Plain Dealer and Call & Post.
COMMITTED TO SAFETY & JUSTICE
In addition to her civil and criminal docket, Judge Synenberg presides over Recovery Court, a specialized docket supervising people diagnosed with drug addiction and suffering from trauma. This dual diagnosis docket is the first Ohio Supreme Court specialized court of its kind in the State. Previously, Judge Synenberg served on the Common Pleas Court’s Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities docket for 5 years.
Throughout Judge Joan’s years on the common pleas bench, she has remained committed to safety & justice. She believes that justice delayed is justice denied for both victims and the accused. That is why she maintains an efficient and up to date docket and has done so for nearly 20 years. Judge Joan is an asset to community safety.
LEADERSHIP
Under Judge Synenberg’s leadership, hundreds of lawyers have donated their legal services to persons who do not have the funds for a lawyer. Judge Synenberg started a monthly Pro Bono Collaborative to bridge the justice gap and assist people in need. Judge Synenberg obtained a grant from the Nord Family Foundation to ensure its success.
Before assuming the bench, Judge Synenberg engaged in an active criminal and civil trial practice for 16 years.
Raised in Cleveland, Judge Synenberg is a graduate of Mayfield High School and in 2010 was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Judge Synenberg toured for one year with the international cast of Up With People, volunteered with Community Re-Entry Resource Network and worked as a social worker at the Cuyahoga County jail before becoming an attorney.
She graduated from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1988. In 2009, she was honored with the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Outstanding Alumna Award.
